We got our pile of pumpkins this year, but it looks like we’ll have them inside at least through Tuesday – and maybe on Halloween itself. Ah, hurricanes.

Pumpkins are great – if you keep them cool, they’ll last for months.About 15 years ago, as an experiment, we kept one to see how long it would last. It made it through the winter, and all the way to St. Patrick’s Day!No wonder farmers’ grew them – fresh squash until spring! Yum!

I actually used to grow pumpkins when I was a kid. Would plant seeds (along with corn, peas) in the Spring. My dad explained about putting stakes for the pumpkin vine to grab onto so the pumpkins could grow. The only thing I had any trouble growing was watermelons.

The day after Halloween, we always find a lot of pumpkin “road kill” in the streets, due to some sort of celebration I guess.

Only problem—I’ve been told by people who raise pumpkins that ‘decorative pumpkins’ ar not good for making pumpkin pies. For that you need ‘field pumpkins’ whose flesh is paler and more favorful.

I knew someone that was too lazy to cut the teeth on a Jack o lantern – the eyes and nose were easily cut triangles, but instead of taking the time to sculpt the teeth, just drilled a 3/4" diameter hole for the mouth. When I asked him about that, he merely said it was the official Monica Lowinski jack o lantern!
