My kids fought and I made a point of not badmouthing their dad…who was never there

Ellie’s comment has nothing to do with what she thinks about her parenting. Most parents just hope that their kids will be wonderful and everything will be perfect, even with little effort. It’s a fantasy that is usually burst on the first week of the baby’s existence, but it’s still nice to hope for.

Everybody wants the perfect thing; the perfect marriage, perfect partner, perfect kids with perfect behavior. But life just isn’t that way. All we can do is try the best we can. I know that sounds totally corny, but it’s the simple truth. We want to be better parents than our own parents were – if such a thing is possible – and we want our kids to be better behaved than we were, and not make the same mistakes we did. But life – well, you know.

She’s being awfully unrealistic to think her kids will be different than any other kids on the planet. Normal brothers and sisters argue, in this Michael and Elizabeth are 100% normal. Elly should take comfort in that. If they didn’t ever argue and got along perfectly, then she ought to worry!

For all that people say here about Elly, at least she is not always looking for something wrong to comment about.

“She’s either saying her kids are better than she was or her parenting is better than her parent’s parenting, so she expects different behavior from her kids . . .”When I’ve said or thought stuff like she said, I didn’t think I was a better parent than others, or that my kids were superior to other kids. I just expected good things because they were mine! (Didn’t always turn out that way.)And I don’t think the kids fight because of the way their parents act. I knew a couple of kids who had the mildest, most pleasant parents you can imagine. The kids were always at each others’ throats. Often kids seem to come into world with personalities that don’t change much, barring catastrophe.

My brother and I fought as kids. Now we’re 80 and 76 and he’s living with me. No one can predict the future.

Is John’s sister ever in the comic? I don’t remember her from the original run although I suppose she might have been at one of the family gatherings that happened.
