The real story behind this strip was quite different from what you see here. It began with a dream. I was on a dock on Bowen Island waiting for the ferry to arrive. It came in with a rush of water and a hiss from the engines, and when it pulled in, the hull hit the wooden pilings and the waves pushed it up and down against them, making an awful, rhythmic scraping sound. This became so loud, it woke me up. There I was in bed, with my arm around my husband, and he was snoring … with the same rhythmic, grating sound!
1. Does she put the “hyp” in HYPOCRITE, too? Or the “crite”? Or the “poc”? Or . . .? (I don’t think it counts if you dream something! You can’t help what your unconscious does.)
2. By now, some of the eagle-eyed commenters like in Doonesbury or A & J or Bizarro would have commented that although Farley is licking Ellie’s right hand, in her dream, the Phil-looking pirate is kissing her left hand. (I’m not that eagle-eyed, but they have trained me.)
When one of my daughters was a teen, she dreamed she was in a boarding school populated by young Southern belles. The teacher was calling the roll:“Cynthia Lucille!” . . . “Heah!”“Audrey Catherine!” . . . “Heah!”“Penelope Jane!” . . . “Heah!” [etc.]Then my daughter woke up, and the family blabbermouth half-Siamese cat was going “Meow! . . . Meow! . . . Meow!” instead of “Heah!”

To me, Conrad looks a awful lot like Elly’s brother, Ted. That would make the dream quite weird.

Why stop those crazy dreams because you’re no longer a kid!! Dreams are one great reason to go to bed at night!

Anyone else notice the colorist’s error in panel 6? Elly’s other hand is in her hair, but the colorist made the hand the same color as the hair!
