and usually there is the option that my mother used as did many around us. one left plus one right makes a pair. Forget worrying about colors since both hands are covered and eventually one will get lost.
I’d never just toss out mis-matched gloves or mittens. If no one in my family wanted to wear a mismatched pair,I would donate the singles. There are plenty of people who would be happy to have them (even if the singles are just used for making hand puppets.) And who knows, maybe another person found your kid’s lost mitten and decided to donate it, too.
We must have 50 single baby-sized sock singles. Frustrated by the fact that my children never have socks, I bought my 9 year old son a couple packs of matching white socks.
Now, my son not only can’t find any socks at all, but I can’t tell his white socks from my husband’s. Loss.
I have a friend whose daughter never wears matching socks, shoes or gloves. That’s become her trade mark. She almost "wouldn’t be caught dead wearing those things that actually match.
There was an old joke that one of the rings of Saturn was made up entirely of the missing socks, mittens, etc.(Another was probably made of luggage lost by airlines.)
Why don’t parents just buy the kids a bunch of identical pairs of mittens. Assuming they don’t always lose either rights or lefts, they could just match them together. Same idea with socks.
As far as whether or not Elly is swearing, I didn’t see a single @ or # or % or * in that panel; hence, she could NOT have been swearing and that’s that!
Some of us don’t know how to bold or occasionally can’t make it work. I usually try to bold it when I post Lynn’s remarks, but until I figured out that it is best to “paste as plain text”, sometimes the bold didn’t work.
I have about 6 pairs each of exactly 3 kinds of socks. Mismatched socks is never a problem. And I don’t need waste time pairing socks when I do laundry. Variations on that theme would save everyone a lot of minor stress.
I often wear mismatched socks when backpacking. With white sport socks over that and then boots, no one ever knows. I did it with cowboy boots back in my square dance calling days too.
The entrance to the miniature railway in Stanley Park (Vancouver) is surrounded by a picket fence. By mid-winter, every picket is topped by a lost glove or mitten!

All my socks are the same color and shade so I don’t have to worry about losing any mates.

They did lose them in a pair — Michael lost one, Liz lost one — that’s two, so it’s a pair.

Given her anger at minor issues, which is the greater number? The national debt or Elly’s blood pressure?

Talking about making a big thing over nothing! I could see if Michael or Lizzie stole something, but for mittens? that’s just pathetic!

In my knitting circle, mismatched is in style — folks are knitting mismatched socks, mittens, gloves, you name it.
