You took many words, but finally got to where you were going: yet another slam at this character. I’ve given up wondering why you read that which annoys you. I guess you like being annoyed.

Elly was right to apologize, if not for them.. for herself. She knew she said something hurtful even if it wasn’t heard. Her conscience got the best of her. Now she can sleep better tonight knowing she did the right thing.John did not make her do it either.

I’ve been in Ted and Irene’s position before and pretended not to have noticed the slight/insult in an effort to not embarrass the offending party. It’s possible that is what is going on here.

Is the last of Ted also? I always thought he was a jerk to women. Irene looks old enough to be his mother. OR is Irene supposed to fade from our memories and Ted goes back to living with mama and using women? Thanks in advance for your help.

    hah, hit submit too soon…

    If I recall correctly:

He makes a pass at Elizabeth (when she is older), not realizing at first that it’s her.

She is right with me here, though I’m more of a coward and usually don’t do it, and months later, think “I should have…”

    Lynn’s Notes:

Here, I’ve created an “Everest of woe”. I can’t see past an infraction until I’ve confronted the offended party and apologized.

I’m a coward; if I thought they really didn’t hear it, I would have made something up instead of telling them what I actually said. I would have told them I had said something innocuous, like “It’s about time,” or “Irene, you didn’t have to settle.”

My guess is that while she thought it was a wisecrack, it was the truth and they took no offense.

A wise neighbor taught me this:You wouldn’t care what other people thought of you if you knew how SELDOM they thought of you.

This plot line is a good example of a common human trait – the tendency to hammer yourself over slights to other people. Being your own harshest judge, IOW. Eg: “I’m sure they’ll never speak to me again, so I’ll just stay away……….” >>> “Where have you been, we’ve missed you?”

I think Elly did the right thing, even if Ted and Irene were unaware of her earlier snark. Righting a wrong is still righting a wrong, regardless of whether the wronged have no clue.

Maybe they are being thoughtful and pretending they didn’t hear her wisecrack so she wouldn’t feel so bad.
