Oh, here comes the stay-at-home vs. working mom debate… A dead horse that has been beaten over and over again for no good reason. Can’t the mommy wars stop and everyone just agree that we ALL work hard and we all make the best decisions for our family?
Annie knows what she wants, and Ellie knows what she wants- it’s different. It’s OK. Ellie always wanted a career, through the whole strip. And yet, they are still friends.
Where most comics and TV shows are mom vs. mother-in-law, this one seems to be Elly vs Elly’s mother. Another punch line they use is that Elly feels annoyance that her kids are spoiled rotten which was similar to her upbringing in the 1950s, which was the arguably the most prosperous time in US and Canadian history, whereas her parents had to get through the Great Depression.
For example, if anyone can find this strip;Elly is going through the refrigeratorElly{talking to herself}: This asparagus is discolored. God only knows how long it has been sitting there…yech! This fish dish smells worse than Michael’s room!…I need to toss all this out…even so, I can’t help feeling guilty about disposing of this…Elly: My mother would have made it into a casserole.
Raising kids is a career. It’s the most important one there is. It’s unpaid and often unappreciated, but it sets the rules and the temperament for the next generation. Whenever I heard a woman say, “I’m just a home maker” or “just a housewife,” I grit my teeth. Like all women who must take time to earn a living, I relied on good daycare to help me raise my children, but I was a hands–on parent. I earned the “mom” in “working mom.”
Thanks! Has anyone ever made a bologna, pepper, custard and gravy casserole? :P The point has been made that Elly believes she has some big shoes to fill, seeing her mother as a superior homemaker (arguably jaded by the fact that Elly was a child when she observed her mother working). It was later on when Elly lost patience with Michael’s sloth and slovenly appearance, and would make remarks to Michael telling him his room smelled like a stockyard, et cetera.

Anne eventually did get an outside job. She became catering manager at a big hotel and handled Elizabeth’s wedding reception.

Ellie give it a rest. Don’t give up your day job. No one likes poetry. Everyone likes wrestling.
