John would be miffed too if he found the kids used his newspaper to keep the pumpkin’s slop off the table.

I am more worried that she complains about the mess, but doesn’t care about her kids (who are how old?) using a knife without adult supervision. And having carved a pumpkin myself today with my kids, i highly doubt this is a dull butter knife.

I agree that was my first thought . Those kids are using a long sharp knife. Pumpkins are very hard to cut. Poor Elizabeth is going to cut her fingers off. Then there will be blood all over the kitchen. John should be carving the pumpkin with the kids. That’s how we did it.

The good old days. Pretty sure I was able to use our sharp knife by age 9 or so and would have used it by myself, though I would have aged them another year or 2 (11 or 12 and 7/8 sounds good) before they could/would do the whole process alone without asking.

Unexpected, huge mess can be traumatic for a parent, that’s for sure. It’s hard to understand, as a child!

It’s kind of sad that the kids are carving the pumpkins alone. It was such a family thing…creating the faces on paper…then the.card table set up outside (easy to hose off the mess)…and finally saving the pumpkins seeds to roast. Wouldn’t have missed the experience for a million dollars!

Like it was in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (the original, not the remake), where Mike Teavee is asked about his cap gun.Mike Teavee: Yes, it is a model of a Colt 45. Pop will not let me have a real one.Mr. Teavee{chuckles}: Sorry son, not until you are 12!

It’s wonderful that you have so many fond memories of the way you and your family did the pumpkin thing.

Personally, I never had that kind of experience, but I’m sure it was a happy time.

But it never occurred to me that it might be kind of sad that they were doing it alone. To them, it might have been a great adventure, spoiled by a mom who, for all we know, was at her breaking point.

I carved the pumpkin as an older child with my younger cousins. We made a big mess but we had newspaper down and my aunt actually took a silly, embarrassing photo of me with pumpkin goo everywhere (even though she was known for yelling a lot like Elly). We saved the seeds for my uncle to roast.
