Exactly! Buy two throws, then you can wash them as required. No problem!
P.S. And if you really don’t want your dog or cat – or both, of course – up on the couch, just try sitting down on the floor at their level for a time. It’s hard, it’s cold at this end of the year, and it’s a long way from the humans they want to be near.
I don’t allow my dogs on my couches, either. They have nice dog beds and blankets and are perfectly comfortable on them. Who wants to get up from couch with clothes full of dog hair? Even with blanket covering the couch, the dogs are nesters and will mess up the blanket until it is not sufficiently covering the couch anyway. It is not being cruel – it is practical. They are not being deprived – their doggy beds are made of similar materials as the sofa. Just be sure they are the right size. For my boxer, I got her a futon mattress. The pet store size for large dogs are a joke – and expensive. I bought the futon mattress on Craiglist.

If you have a dog with the problem, you can get dog steps so they don’t have to jump up and down. I put a throw on the couch, BTW.
