Lynn’s Notes:My husband often came home exhausted. Working with sensitive people, using tiny instruments and fidgety materials in an awkward space, takes endless patience. Added to this is the management of staff and copious paperwork. I think dentistry is one of the most tiring jobs there are.
I thought back then, dentists, orthodontists, and dental mechanics (appliance fitters) were separate occupations in Canada. Part of the culture shock we encountered.
And a relatively high suicide rate from the stress.
When I was in the Army, one man came back from the dentist and said that the dentist said he could benefit from a bridge. Normally, we only do these for officers, but I’ve never done one before, and -—-
I think that they discovered; some years ago; that a lot of Dentists were suffering from mercury poison from using amalgams for fillings. Heavy metal poisoning can lead to serious mental illness.
The consensus, among those I have encountered, was that it is not exactly a hoax, but a bit overblown. They recommend it for “more elderly” patients on grounds that you will be dead before it has an effect. [Or you will be considered senile from other causes first.]

So Jeffrey doesn’t like his teeth getting professionally cleaned at whereas Melissa tried to fix her retainer (or “appliance”) herself?
