Now Steve needs a chiropractic appointment the next night. (I forgot to mention yesterday that I once had a fridge outside my donation trailer where I work upon arrival to start the day. Had to phone my father to give me a hand with it to move it out of the parking space it was in to closer to the trailer. Luckily one of the trucks/lorries came later and picked it up [and maybe week’s time card] rather than moving it into the trailer.)

It looks like they laid a board across the steps and pushed the refrigerator up the board on one corner. Of all the ways to move that refrigerator, I would be hard-pressed to think of a more difficult method. Doesn’t anyone have a dolly?

Greg and John look like they need drinks too, instead of just Connie and Elly. No wonder Greg doesn’t want to be social with the Pattersons.

Remember, this strip was drawn 30-35 years ago. Dolly was not sold in stores back then. Perhaps rented for special occasion such as this at home improvement stores or moving companies. They should have rented one AND asked Annie and Steve – they were the younger couple and more capable of pushing a fridge up the steps than mid-aged Greg and Connie. Being a hoarder, Steve even might have a dolly – left behind by somebody in the alley.

What they should have done is call the store that delivered the fridge and ask them to come back with a dolly and move it into the house as they were supposed to. Elly tended to avoid confrontations or make demands so it makes sense she rather ask her neighbors to help move it.

Did nobody have enough sense to rent a dolly? I had a new refrigerator delivered just last week, and one man both delivered and set it in place.

Bought a massage chair for my back. One guy delivered it. I had to help him get it into the house. He had a dollie but still had to push/pull it up 15 stairs into house. I got a lot of use out of that chair.

The store actually sent two guys to deliver our refrig— a smaller model due to height restrictions. They had no trouble lifting it between them. Then one guy attached up the ice maker. The other gave us the manual and a lecture on how to use the refrig.

We had friends who would invite us over once in a while, and when we’d get there, there would be chores to do. The final straw was when they wanted their pool set up. Their teenaged son wanted to use it. However, the second we showed up the son went to a friend’s house. The parents (our friends) didn’t stop him. We said that, since HE was the one who wanted to use it, HE should be the one to help set it up. That was the last time.

Is that water that Ellie’s passing Connie? I would think beer and pizza would be the least they could expect for helping move something that awkward!

First of all the dolly needs to have a “step crawler” on it or you’re better off dead lifting it up the stairs. The folks who deliver fridges these days rarely use a dolly. They use a sort of two-man sling/harness to lift and carry the fridge into place.

Elly and John ought to invite these two over for dinner as a thank you for the help moving the fridge.

Just as a bit of explanation: stories are developed months in advance, just as writer might be writing a story in words, they are done in pictures. The punch line at the end is the goal of every set of strips. … That’s what I love about FBFW, Lynn’s imagination always comes up with a daily life observation and is able to turn it into a two or three word punch line. … In real life, that’s what would have happened: a pizza party at the end, or a dinner invitation a month or so later, after the whole kitchen was “put together”. That’s what happened in our own experience: we helped our friends move, and they helped us in return, and after each move we had those pizza/beer/wine parties and at a later date a dinner or a bbq by way of a thank you…

When I lived in Arizona, the bumper sticker on the back of my pickup read:

    Yes, this is my truck.

    No, I won’t help you move !

    Lynn’s Notes:

We did get a new fridge, but it was delivered and installed by professionals. During the delivery, I wondered how we’d have managed on our own. Asking myself, “What if?” was always a great way to start a series of strips.

Trick questions to be wary of; “Are you guys busy tonight?” or “Can you do me a favour?”
