I mentioned comedy movie of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “The Returned Missionary” a few days ago on strip “Heart of the City.” Main character’s family has a Tongan foreign exchange student. Guess who got the top bunk and crushed the other guy when the top bunk gave way.

Lynn Johnston loves this top bunk sagging joke and has done it before and will do it a few more times. The last time was with Lizzie visiting her cousins on their farm and getting the bottom bunk.

I was lucky, my summer camp experience was a barracks, with no bunkbeds, just iron bedsteads (singles) lined up on opposite sides of the cabin. I think each cabin held about 30 kids.

One year my husband & I went to a Prayer Retreat. There was a mistake in getting the rooms, however: only 2 of the married couples who attended could have their own rooms; the rest had to split up & share rooms with singles. We all agreed that the two longest-married (aka oldest) couples should have the private rooms. The room I was in had 5 beds: 2 bunks and a single. I volunteered to take a top bunk. My husband got a lower bunk in his room.

I was at a retreat a few weeks ago where we were all in bunk beds. I was in the bottom bunk, and my bunk mate was a little woman who weighs maybe 100 pounds. Between that and the fact that the mattress supports were solid wood, there was no danger of falling through, but if you sat up too fast, you bonked your head on the underside of the top bunk.

That’s nothing! I had a bed wetter in the top bunk over me at camp. We had mattresses stuff with straw in those days. Great way to wake up….

    Lynn’s Notes:

When I went to Brownie Camp in the 50s, the beds were old and the springs were sagging. The bigger kids always seemed to get the top bunks, and I remember being terrified as I lay on my lower bunk looking up at the perilously sagging shape in the bunk above mine.

I would have slept on the floor if that doofus wouldn’t help fix it.

When it’s your turn in the top bunk, Michael, be sure and load up on the baked beans at dinner.
