Elly, that’s where you are different from Connie. You are upset because a baby is needy and will monopolize your time. You are enjoying your alone time now that Mike and Liz are older and more independent. AND you ARE forgetting you will have built in babysitters in Liz and Mike and extra helping hands as well for everyday care. Even John might be more helpful with the new baby now that he is older and more settled. April will be a different motherhood experience for you, Elly. (and not to forget Grandpa Jim…)
At this point in 1990, Lawrence is 14, Gayle is 16, Molly is 17. None of Connie’s kids are grown. Connie is still legally obligated to take care of those children. In the Canada the age of majority is 18 years old in Ontario where this comic strip is set. I don’t know about Connie’s kids with Connie, but my kids still needed me when they were those ages.

Maybe Connie should adopt Elly’s baby when it’s born. That way, they’d both get what they want.

To me that is not a good enough reason to have a kid. This would have to be one of several better reasons.

To me her problem is sad. Besides there are volunteer programs that need her. Lots of things out there needing people.
