There is one logic flaw in this. All of the numerous cars I have owned require the key to be used in order to play the radio, cassette player, etc. I doubt Elly went in the house and left the ignition key in the car. Especially with Michael around. There is no way he can drain the battery.
I would ride with my father in his Willys service wagon. It’s heater blower would work, even with the key off. So I could sit behind the wheel and run the fan up and down, pretending it was the motor.
It seems that since the automobile was invented, it was the dream of all boys (and many) girls to one day be behind the wheel of a car. It seems pretty certain that driverless cars will soon be safe enough to drive. Will the mystic still be there?

Yeah, just wait until you have a car of your own and then you’ll realize just how many expenses come with it…

I did that with my Dad’s International Scout when he brought it home. It was used and smelled it, but it was new to me.

I did that when I was a kid, and killed my uncle’s car battery listening to the radio in his 1950 Ford!
