Many congregations – and even some denominations – require the members of the congregation to do basic janitorial work themselves in order to teach the importance of respect for the building.
I know this is just a joke and maybe it’s the character’s self-importance that we are supposed to be laughing at. But I cannot fathom how so many people, rather casually, look down on janitors, custodians and/or their line of work. I appreciate the work they do and, too often, they are expected to do more than their job duties by their employers and “customers”. I was one a long time ago so speaking from experience.
