That’s the one problem I always had with the George Balanchine staging. Other productions have Clara waking up in the real world at the end, some of them showing Clara meeting Drosselmeier’s real-world nephew (the counterpart to the Nutcracker Prince) and realizing that it wasn’t quite a dream after all. London’s Royal Ballet staging even shows the nephew joyously reuniting with his uncle.
