Marcus: I can't believe Eileen Jacobson didn't write anything in your Valentine's Card. I mean, she wrote mushy stuff to every boy in our class! Embarrassingly mushy, even! And all this time we'd assumed she had some secret crush on you. Good thing the feelings weren't mutual, or this might actually be painful. Jason: Good thing.

Eileen is a clever, clever girl. She knows perfectly well Jason likes her and has deliberatly made him miserable in this exquisitely painful way.

School day crushes were gut wrenching. I was painfully shy until my late teens, so all my crushes were on those girls that didn’t even notice me. But…once I got some confidence I made up for lost time, fortunately that was in the late 60’s, and some of you may remember what those times were like.
