I knew a 16 year old kid who came from a family like that. They were all vegans, but he put himself on the most restrictive vegan diet possible. At a cookout, he refused to eat anything, even corn on the cob. I remember him looking thin and sickly.

I believe in BEEF! We buy beef hotdogs (although part of the reason is my husband is allergic to turkey). I tried veggie burgers once, not knowing that they were veggie, and thought they tasted like grass.

Odd, no, that the kids left out “independence from parental income”?

A friend’s husband once went into a fast food place that promised they’d never laugh at what you ordered and ordered a veggie burger with cheese and bacon and got scolded by another customer for making fun of vegans….

Amen. Most of the commenters have talked so glowingly about meat consumption that one would think that it’s a superfood. If you want to get a different take on the health aspects of eating animal products, try reading The China Study. If you do want to eat animal products, select those products carefully – the vast majority of animal products come from animal factories, where unhealthy animals are packed as tightly together as possible. The animals suffer horribly, the factories generate so much animal waste that it invariably pollutes the watershed, the antibiotics fed to the animals have resulted in antibiotic-resistent viruses, etc., etc. Meat has become dirt-cheap because meat production is heavily subsidized and because meat producers have managed to pass most of the costs of their operations on to others in the form of environmental impact and an unhealthy product.

Soy is NOT good for you. Of course this comic strip predates the publication of all the books that explain why. Meat from animals that are shot full of hormones is no good either, but not all meat is treated that way.

Isn’t it odd that vegetarians insist others be vegetarians, too? That’s one of the myths about liberal “tolerance”. Libs are totalitarian fascists, demanding everyone be like them.

I’ve had soy-wheat dogs a few times from staying with my father, who has been vegetarian since about 2004. Needless to say, I much prefer the kind made with beef; and to a lesser extent, with pork and chicken.

If there were a drug on the market responsible for as many birth defects and health consequences as tofu and other forms of unfermented soy it would be pulled form the market in a storm of outrage. Because it has a well-fluffed reputation as being magical pc hippy food and a source of protein (it is a very bad source of protein), its consequences are ignored. There is some form of unfermented soy in over 65% of processed food on the market today and people are getting sicker for consuming too much of it. Soy in moderation as it was traditionally consumed is fine (no more than a couple times a month…as a CONDIMENT and in addition to some other source of protein such as fish). Soy is not a substitute for meat.

I have never given my then children, now adults, soy products. I had one example at a resurant by accident never again. I do not eat hot dogs. We do use cooked ground turkey, glad we’re not allergic to that.

soy could be healthy and useful to people with objections-religious, moral, or allergic. but, hot dogs on the 4th should be meat like the nathan’s hot dog eating contest.

Wheat from American fields has been bred for a minimum 23% gluten content, while in Europe it is still closer to its natural 9%. The higher gluten content is not for better nutrition, but to make a bread that will be light and puffy faster (think “WonderBread” as in, wonder what’s really in it) so that it is cheaper to get it on store shelves. Soy as a substitute for meat is similarly ridiculous as a dietary choice. The high levels of gluten, soy protein and GMO grains in processed foods is what is making America sick and fat. We need to work on getting back to natural food sources if we want to get back to being healthy. And FAD DIETS are not the way to get there.`
