Oh I remember Compuserve at 300 bps. Once the free credits that came with the modem were done, so was I. I missed it a bit until I found out about BBS’s. They were much more engaging and even when I got more credits on Compuserve, I never bothered with it.
Remember when you had to get a free software disc from the bookstore to install AOL? And you only got a certain number of free minutes, after which they started charging by the minute to stay online. Webpages took several minutes to load sometimes, depending on the size of the page and bandwidth traffic. Your connection came through your telephone landline, and would often slow down to a crawl. (At its fastest, it was a crawl by today’s standards.) Windows 3.1 was the operating system, and things hadn’t changed much when Windows 95 was released. It was a big deal when AOL started offering “unlimited access” for about $25 a month. Ah, the memories.
