    (36 – 24) x 17.5 = 210 – 209 = 1

I still wonder when I reach someone’s voicemail on their cell phone. The carriers go on for 45 seconds to explain HOW TO ANSWER a voice mail. This is akin to giving people instructions on how to open a pop top can.

Pop top cans have been around for about 50 years voicemail only about half as long but it’s a good bet that there are very few people on the planet that don’t know to start talking at the sound of the beep.

I get why carriers did this originally. They used to charge by the minute and this was a good means of “revenue enhancement.” Today, it is just an annoyance.

I used to get so many errant calls I changed my answer message to… “If you want to talk to Kirk, leave a message. If you want to talk to anyone else you have the wrong number.” …I got several compliments on it from people I called back. (note: I had a “land line” for a long time which I never answered, and that’s the number I gave to everyone except close friends and family.)

If confronted with that the easy, if inelegant, solution is to mash any key— starting with 1.

If you want to press one, press one now. If you want to press two, hang up and dial again. Then press one.
