The best way to deal with a crisis like this is head on. Declaring “fake news” or sweeping it under the rug will only exacerbate it. Take the hit, pick yourself up and start over. The Catholic Church is big enough. It will go on. It may have a few scars to show for it, but speaking as an old timer myself, be proud of your scars: they show what you’ve survived.
@DanFlak: It depends on your priorities. Choose one: “Follow the demands of Jesus and destroy your mafia-like money-rich and morale-low organization” or “save your organization and their resources and huddle through with proclamations”… Alternative outcome of the first strategy: You might get killed and change nothing anyway.
Let priests marry, let women become priests, and a bunch of other life changing things. A religion should live and breath, move on with the times not stay stuck in the past mired in dust, stagnation and dogma.
I’m Jewish. I’m sorry to say that the orthodox has similar problems. I don’t know if I’m going to be yelled at for what I’m saying. But as my Senator said at the Supreme Court hearing, “Bring it on!”
A wonderful summary of the situation, Brother Patrick!
This is one of those times when there is a choice to make between protecting the institutional church and following Jesus. Given these options, church people usually do the former. But when they do the latter, wondrous things can happen.
So far it is protect the institution at all costs to liberty, freedom, purity of children, their own religion for the corrupting institution that breeds those kinds of people to flock to the Church and take over 6 diocese. I’d say a massive cleaning of the Catholic so called church is needed both inside and outside. Either close down all diocese and have them gone over by police with a fine tooth comb. There is no violation of the 1st Amendment since you don’t need buildings to worship in. But there are those who would twist it to protect criminal actions.
