If the “Bill of Rights” was built into the Constitution Vermont might have been one of the “Original Fourteen.” Vermont was an Independent nation until the Bill of Rights were added.

I know 13 is lucky! I decided to test the concept at a local casino; so once inside the casino, I walked through the doors 13 times!

T Hicks: A lot of regions claim to be independent nations from time to time. Not just Vermont, the “California Republic” is still claimed on its state flag. Anyone can claim anything, but it isn’t independent until other independent nations say it is. Therefore only two states can legitimately claim to have survived as independent nations: Texas and Hawaii. Also, Texas’ claim of six flags is fiction – no one recognized the Confederate States of America as a legitimate nation, although Britain and France admitted it was a region in revolt (they needed the cotton, although Britain was rapidly developing India as a source, shipping was too expensive until the Suez Canal was available).

When I was a wee lad attending Catholic private school, there was once some discussion of superstitions in the class.As luck would have it, there was one ice cream bar leftover from the lunch period, and the nun decided this would be a good “teaching moment” (gawd I hate those).So she offered to give the ice cream to the first student who guessed a number. Me, being the brainiac I once was, figured it had to be thirteen, akin to the morning’s lectures on superstition. That was the number I guessed. She said, “no”.OK, we go through the entire class, and nobody guesses the number. Probably now 30, 45 minutes later, she writes it up on the chalkboard — 13. “Hey, that’s what I guessed!” I cry! And the other students verified my claim.“Oh, sorry,” the nun says, “I thought he said 30.”Of course, by this time, having spent all that time to go through the entire class, the ice cream is now soggy and melted.And I’ve had triskaidekaphobia ever since. It’s for real, people, 13 is evil!

colcam: But who recognized that? Not even the adjacent US or UK. Both, with some eight other nations, recognized Texas and Hawaii. That is the difference between delusion and reality. And it made no difference during the time of independence, that the US ultimately decided to invade Hawaii, and keep it despite Cleveland’s attempt to give it back. Or that Lamar’s racist policies (aided by term limits removing Houston) bankrupted the Republic of Texas, making it ripe for the taking.
