It’s not the doors the Commanders are worried about… it’s the hatches that concern them.

I can think of two other things, right offhand, that a sub commander REALLY hates to hear: “Fire in the forward torpedo room!” and “The reactor is running wild and we can’t shut it down!”

Isn’t this the principal of an air lock? Close the inner door before you open the outer door. Reverse on re-entry.

My son tells me a funny story about a shakeout cruise he did on a recently refurbished submarine. Evidently some connection was not watertight, and before they got to 50 feet down they had four feet of water in the ship. Much emergency diving into the internal water to try (ultimately successfully) to close the breach. Exciting, but not as dangerous as it sounds, and ultimately comic the way he tells the story.
