Louis Untermeyer’s essay “The Pun: The Lowest Form of Humor” tells of a jester who boasted that he could pun on any subject. The king suggested his royal self; the jester replied that he couldn’t pun on the king because the king wasn’t a subject. The king sentenced the jester to hang for that, but at the gallows offered a pardon if the jester would never pun again. “No noose is good noose,” replied the jester, and died happy.
