I don’t get it.

Maybe the question is “Why don’t people take care of business while they’re already parked, rather than suddenly remembering on their way out?”

I don’t think it’s that obscure, just not that funny. Anybody leaving the bathroom has taken care of business and no longer has the need to squirm, etc. So why hasn’t the driver “taken care of business” in the parking lot by completing his phone call before getting back on the road and talking while driving? As I said, not that funny. (Anybody else with a different take on the meaning of the joke please advise.)

My take is the same as frumdebang’s.

Caulfield was asking why they leave the parking lot if they still have to…. talk.

From the color of his eyes, he has obviously been possessed by the devil. Or an infection. Or dangerously high blood pressure. Or an incompetent colorist. Or any combination of the above. As for the “joke”, ’t’aint funny, with or without explanation.

Can’t you just picture Mrs. Olsen praying for the day when Caulfield goes to middle school?

He said, "But put the three together. . . " I see the car scenario and the potty scenario. Is the third the part about seeing this quite often? I’m with Tokyo.

I See C’s Point. We still are not multitasking enough. Wear depends and skip the bathroom.

I was relieved to read that other people didn’t get it, either.

Maybe not one of the better ones, but let’s give Jef Mallet a break. I’d rather get a day here or there that’s ho-hum than see him stop writing the strip altogether because of the great pressure to always, “say something funny.” A good writer probably knows that and brushes away that pressure and enjoys the craft.

As for the phone call, at least the driver dialed before putting the car in gear.

I agree that it is meant to be more of a social commenttary than hilarious. Many time Jeff gets them both at once, but that would be rare for the rest of us.

A good rule for jokes: if it has to be explained, you didn’t tell it right.

I agree with Keith Hocker….there have other social commentary types of strips by Jeff that have been a hoot and SO spot on! I think my feeling was more “Oh good, it’s not my tired brain”…it just took a little more thought than I could muster on a Sunday morniing. ;-)

yldchyld is right. In fact, that always applies to this strip. I don’t think it’s ever meant to be funny. It’s always some sort of lame social commentary.

My dad said something like that… if you have to explain it, it isn’t funny.Re driving and talking on the phone, here’s a hair-raising one a friend told me. Her son uses a wheelchair and had aides that come in during the day and help him. One last week, whom you would think would have old enough to know better, was Texting while driving her son someplace. Her son told her about it and added that he had to tell her a couple of times that the light was red and she needed to brake. My friend called the agency and told them what happened and they were going to fire her immediately, but she asked for them to wait until they had a replacement lined up, since my friend is currently job-hunting and needs someone there. So they gave her a severe warning, but as soon as they find someone else, this dolt is out.My point is that the driving and talking/texting issue is a very serious one, hard to make funny, but it needs to be talked about, in as many venues as possible.
