Frazz by Jef Mallett for February 26, 2012
Transcript:
Girl: What's that thing Frazz: It's a kiwi fruit Girl: It looks like a big, hairy goose egg. Frazz; Good eye. It was called a chinese gooseberry until 1953. Girl: No wonder! Frazz: Oh, that's nothing compared to what marketers did with fish. Would you want to eat a slimehead? Or a patagonian toothfish? Neither did anybody elsem until they started calling them orange roughy and chilean sea bass. Now they're so popular they're at risk of being overfished. Girl: I mean no wonder it's all green inside. Frazz: No, no. They renamed the whole species.

Same with humans. Back in ‘53 I would’ve been an old fogie, but these days marketing has renamed me as a Senior Citizen.

Those are nothing compared to Canola oil – made from rapeseed.

@GatoCat—hopefully you’re not, as I am one year older and likelier to be green!

I got 10 Kiwis in my Bountiful Basket this week. www.bountifulbaskets.org

Yeah, the marketing guys didn’t think “Rapeseed Oil” would sell well either. That’s how we ended up with Canola. True story.

Kudos for the “I say it’s spinach…” reference in the throwaway. It’s from way before my time, but one I’ve known since the ’50s!

How green must my innards be at 74? Or my brother’s at 79?

Whenever I get Brevity in the email I briefly think Mallett’s really let himself slip.

It’s still called a Chinese gooseberry in places where the European gooseberry is a popular fruit. They share some similarities in their appearance—hairy skin, green flesh, full of small black seeds…

This is the second Sunday in a row I got Brevity, are they trying to maraket more strips?

Good afternoon to all you moldy old senior citizens born in 1953. I keep forgetting though, to ask for all those senior citizen discounts. Imagine how much money I could potentially save? I guess there are some benefits, I suppose . . . .

Dr. Midnight: Correct. It was called rape because the way it would take over a wheat field. Then they discovered a use for it more valuable than wheat. “A weed is a plant for which we have yet to find a use.” “A weed is any plant where you don’t want it. A rose bush is a weed in a wheat field and wheat is a weed in a rose garden.”

Love Frazz. Am glad to know I’m not the only one who got DeFrazzed today.

Why do I have Brevity in my mycomicspage email instead of Frazz?
hippogriff over 12 years ago
pschearer: The etymological meaning is to seize, which is the first step in any rape.
