Actually, I’d like to dispute that premise. I have often blown “steam rings”, but you need optimal lighting or a dark background to see them. And, for what it’s worth, the action creates a toroidal vortex in the air whether you can see it or not.

My father used to fascinate us with his smoke rings. Now I lie on my back in a pool and make my own.
