Transcript:
Checkered boy: I went ice fishing and caught a crappie. Red boy: Oookay. I went sledding and caught a sniffly. Girl: I'll be sitting over there. Checkered boy: Not only is it cold and slow, ice fishing is doing nothing for my image. Frazz: Whatever motivates people to ice fish, prestige isn't it.

Where I come from, too. But maybe the kid mispronounced it, making the other kids think he was referring to a personal problem. It’s a little unclear to me.

A contagious personal problem!

The biggest problem with ice shanties is that you have to use dish instead of cable…

Down South where we talk without an accent and correctly, it is pronounced “Crap-pee”

No, the motivation isn’t prestige. It’s the satisfaction that comes from personal accomplishment, knowing you got those fish yourself, and no one gave a crappie.

In Louisiana we call them Sacalait (sock-ah-lay). I think it means Milk Fish for the white meat.

Drag all that equipment out onto Ford Lake. Drill a hole, sit on an overturned bucket for several hours watching a fishing pole wedged into the ice! Hmm… what am I missing here?I’d rather have needles in my eyes!

I have lived in IN, MO, MS, TX, NV, and IL I have visited every state west of the MS except for the nothernmost tier. I have always heard it pronounced phonetically, ie. as it’s spelled.

Around here (NE Ohio) that particular kind of fish is pronounced “croppy,” but I don’t know if thats a regional pronounciation or not. Frazz is located in Michigan, supposedly.

Garrison Keillor attributes the general success of Lake Wobegon marriages to ice fishing – it gives husband and wife some time without each other.

Pronouncing “crappie” as “croppie” sounds like pronouncing “Uranus” as “U’-ran-us” (accent on the U).

Robert Tompsett: Not around here. That ecological niche is held by catfish (also good eating), gar, and carp. Crappie are such top-feeders you can see them breaking the surface on occasion.
