Girl: Yessss! There's some comfort in the first day of school starting off bad anyway. Boy: Lucky you. Your lunch bag soaked through and gave way a block ago.
I kind of dreaded the first day of school, but I have nothing but good memories of them…All those friends you haven’t seen for a while,…all the catching up to do…
I liked the smell of the wet rubber raincoats in the “cloak room”, but hated mass in the dark morning. Depressing way to start the day. Some nuns were OK, as were most lay people. Later, same for Brothers of HC and Jesuits. The latter were intelligent enough to communicate with.
first day of school, fourth grade, lightning hit the blacktop behind the school and set off the fire alarm in the middle of a downpour. what a miserable day.

The brand-new clothes. And the pencils with no tooth marks and erasers intact.

I’ve never attended school at any level that started after Labor Day. Most public schools around here start the second week of August.
