Mr. Spaetzle: How was your summer, Caulfield? Caulfield: Awesome! I discovered you can take classes from M.I.T. online for free! Frazz: Way to intimidate the principal. Caulfield: I said I discovered it. I didn't say I took any. Frazz: Uh huh. Caulfield: Or what I scored on my exams.

Yes you can. It doesn’t count for a degree from MIT, though you do get a certificate of completion from them under their Online Ed service. Which isn’t named MIT BTW. Many of the courses there are older though, not their current course load. Still a great thing to do though, I found them through another link almost a year ago.

This isn’t exactly new. Several schools have been doing this for a few years now. Including Berkeley, Georgia Tech and other universities. Free online courses like these don’t count towards a degree, but I think I remember reading that at least GT has a program you can enroll in that’s much cheaper than attending but DOES count. Maybe expensive education will finally come to the masses that want it.

When I was in high school, I tended to read books (fun books) under the desk in class to deal with the occasional boredom. In college, I found that doodling on my note paper worked better and didn’t get me off track as much as reading did. I don’t know if this helps anyone who gets bored in class or knows someone who does.
