I’ve always wondered about that. People say, “Bless you”, or “Gesundheit” if you sneeze, but not if you cough, hiccup, yawn, burp, or fart! But the person doing those things has to say, “Excuse me” on each of them!Howcum?

“Whenever Mrs. Kissel breaks wind we beat the dog.” A silly scene from the movie “10”. (There is a clip on Youtube, only mildly salty, but I don’t feel like a lucky punk.)

Calvin postulated one time that we should curse rather than bless germ spewing fountains who cough or sneeze by you

I knew a woman who was an editor at a medical publishing house. She shared information on an article claiming that the anal sphincter was the smartest muscle in the body, because it could release or retain solid, liquid and gaseous matter individually or all at once.

I was taught that, long ago, a sneeze was considered “a little death” because your heart stopped during it. Therefore, people said “God bless you” so that the sneezer would either come back to life, or fare well on the other side.

Well, I’ve heard that people say “bless you” because your heart stops for a split second while sneezing.

As Pasquale said over at “Rose is Rose”, hiccups and burps are not as holy as sneezes. (They’re too nice over there to bring up farts.)
