Mrs. Olsen: You look happier than I would have thought. Caulfield: There's always joy to be found. Mrs. Olsen: Even when it rains on the last day of school? Caulfield: It's the most unruinable day of the year! Mrs. Olsen: That's a very mature outlook. Caulfield: Also, you left your car windows down.

“But you can be happy when you’ve a mind to.”.I have found in my trips around the sun, that some people are happiest when they are miserable.

This is a new side of Caufield to me. Joy in someone else’s misfortune. Does he dislike Mrs. Olsen that much?

Well, it looks like a 70% chance of rain all day at Bryson Elementary, and a 98% chance of bigpuma and NightGaunt squaring off in the comments section.

Whether it is irony or not… to me, it seems mean spirited. I do not like that being a side of Caulfield’s character. I hope it is not highlighted further.

I see it that he just now noticed her windows, and he did tell her. And what kid isn’t happy on the last day of school? I still say he will give the tearful eulogy at her funeral.

Wow, he really must hate that teacher. I wonder what great sin she’s committed, other than being square, and trying to make decent human beings of her students. There’s good-natured ribbing and then there’s just being an a-hole (and yes, that term can apply to 9-year-olds). At what point, if ever, was he planning to share this knowledge with Ms. Whatshername? How long has he known? Is it that much fun to know her car is, inch by inch, filling up with water? One can only hope he makes the same mistake when he starts driving and gains a shred of overdue empathy.

The last day of school in late June? Holy cow! How many snow-days did they have last winter?!

My sister called me one time to drive across town in the rain and bring her an extra car key to her when she locked herself out of her car in a shopping center parking lot. We unlocked the driver’s door to find the passenger-side back seat soaked from the rain coming in the open window.
