In some ways February can seem like the longest month. Here it is just 10 days in and I’m ready for April already.

Never much cared for February, so it’s a good thing it’s short

But April, is, of course, the cruelest month.

February’s so short because Julius and August Caesar each swiped a day from it to pad out the months named for them. Colossal egos in national leaders aren’t a new thing.

There is a Monty Python piece I could recommend if I wanted to guarantee that, at the utmost possible, this morning’s Frazz would be merely the second-best thing you consume today. I think the sketch is most commonly identified by the title “The Funniest Joke in the World.” The premise was that it was so funny anyone who heard it would immediately die from laughter.

When I was a teen-ager, Leon Keys — a great friend, teacher, mentor and, as it would turn out, major life influence — told me what he claimed was the funniest joke in the world, and, well, here I am. I didn’t say Leon was perfect. I said he was great, which is better. The joke was this:

Q: “What is the crookedest thing in the world?”

    A: “A flatus.”

Q: “ Who the hell says ‘flatus’? “

A (ignoring Q.2): “It heads for your toes and ends up at your nose.”

I acknowledged it was indeed the most some superlative or other joke I had ever heard, but not the funniest. But I also didn’t say Leon was a conventional mentor. Leon had a way of getting under your skin and making you think, in spite of him and in spite of yourself, and it looks like I just spent 40 years trying to think of a way to make that dog sing.

    How’d I do?
