For those that are as confused as I was before looking it up …

‘Mother’ is a term for the sourdough starter dough.

As an avid sourdough baker I love this one!!!!

Is this the mother of all jokes?

Who want’s to bet that Mallett just learned the term?

There’s a fascinating section on sourdough in Never Home Alone: From Microbes to Millipedes, Camel Crickets, and Honeybees, the Natural History of Where We Live, a 2018 book by naturalist Rob Dunn. His basic premise is that we are inevitably awash in microbes for 100% of our existence on Earth and that it makes better sense to try to cooperate with them than to go to war with them. (Seems like there might be a larger lesson in there somewhere too.)

The teacher didn’t seemed very concerned that she brought in human remains for show and tell. Must be a progressive school.

Seeing “urn” in a joke reminds me of the stale old chestnut that ends with the line “about 5 drachma an hour.”

My mother has lived in my fridge for 43 years, cracks me up to tell folks that.
