If you know what’s going to be obsolete in 20 years, go for an MBA.

The formula used to be: Study your interest and lay an MBA on top of it.

Things that won’t be obsolete in 20 years: predictions about what will be obsolete in 20 years.

Most everything will be obsolete in 10 years, except learning.

I don’t see math going away. Or literature.

But that philosophy will keep you out of computers. Which is probably the think you most need to learn.

What will last, what will go away, and what can be modified, that is the difficulty.

Literature, History, Philosophy: The Humanities.

Learn to interact with other people on a face to face basis.

Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook and then whatever you want. Nowadays those basic software skills are more needed than anything else.

My next door neighbor majored in Spanish. It won’t be obsolete in any human time frame. On the other hand, she sells toothpaste for a living.

Double up on the literature……

A dancer? Those are skills that’ll stand you in good stead for decades.

What is important is not learning specific things, so much, as learning how to learn.

Said the kid in a comic strip, a medium that was predicted to be obsolete by now, made for newspapers, an industry that was supposed to be obsolete by now. If you think it’s hard to predict what’s bound to succeed, try predicting what’s doomed to fail.

Predictions of long term trends have a better chance then predicting specific things will become obsolete.

I’d really like to know that politics as we know it will be obsolete in 20 years… but on second thought it might be worse. Yeesh!
