I’m at an age where I’m starting to not want a huge meal. It’s only partly about weight control, it’s also about… just getting full. This is good and bad: Good because I’m buying less food (which is also good because prices aren’t falling…). Bad when we go out for a meal and the boxed leff tovers just aren’t nearly as good as yesterday.
Tomatoes are getting smaller. First it was cherry tomatoes, now it is grape tomatoes. Then there are the super miniature ears of corn which are so cute I cannot eat them. It’s akin to eating a platter of kittens…
For the most part, gone are the days of sitting at a lunch counter sipping a tiny ceramic cup of coffee. Now we leave the drive-thru with our extra large bucket of coffee.
had huge strawberries with no taste (this year my tiny wild strawberries have been good) and table grapes, all full of tasteless juice. (but the wild muscadines were delicious).
In the 1950’s a Three Musketeers candy bar had three clear divisions and was advertised as “Big enough to share”. Look at the old Coca Cola ads from the 1890’s to see the size glass you got for your 5 cents. Of course, “Coke” had a bit more kick back then when it was more of a patent medicine offshoot.
Dinner plates are bigger, silverware is bigger, glasses are bigger, cups are bigger, restaurant and surely home portions are bigger. Look at your grandma’s old china. It’s about half the size of what is in stores now, and it was plenty big enough for a normal meal.

If humans can take a wolf and selectively breed it into anything from a 2 kg pooch to a 80 kg mastiff they can make shallots bigger.

I miss the old blackberries. The ones in the supermarket now are like giant frankenfruit.

“Soda pop”, I’d have said that or I might have said just “soda”. I’d never have said just “pop”.

The bigger is better mentality is faulty. With produce you might get more calories & fiber, but flavour gets watered down.

The answer to her question is that you can grow more food in the same field when what you are growing is bigger.
