I believe that “Viking” (possibly pronounced “Veeking”) is more of a job description than a nationality.

If Mrs. Olsen is (or was) married, then it is her husband that is Scandinavian. Of course, her maiden name could also be Scandinavian.

Viking was a job description, not a particular tribe or the like.

“By ‘you’, I was (of course) referring to both of you – as in ‘How did both of you and your ancestors turn out so nice?’.”

Olsen heard and will remember and Caulfield will be reminded later on.

In Iceland, if you are given the name Jon and are the son of Magnus you are Jon Magnusson. If you are Helga the daughter of Magnus you are Helga Magnussdottir. I learned that watching curling a few years ago…

We are speaking of the Norse, Viking is a tribe.

The “-sen” ending is Danish, which reminds me of a story I heard years ago about the Copenhagen phone book (back when such things existed) being organized by occupation, because 90% of its subscribers shared about a dozen surnames, and nobody wanted to try to figure out which of the hundreds of Ole Olsens or Jens Jensens was the one they really wanted to call.

Did Caulfield imply that Mrs Olsen is nice? Are pigs flying?

I happen to be Swedish, British, and German American. (With a bit of a Norse background.)

It was coffee. Why bother rowing, rowing, rowing, and having to lug all that loot around and overpower all those women, when you can sit by the fire and have a nice cup coffee, maybe a nice piece herring. Note that coffee, while a stimulant for most people, has a sedative affect on Scandinavians. See, for example, the scene with Mimir in Poul Anderson’s Operation Luna.
