Not just credit cards; some of the British banks (the Scottish ones were particularly bad, so much for their reputed cannyness) thought that buying into US subprime debt was a good idea.
The “canny” banks made billions of pounds buying into the subprime deal. It was the like of you and I, the taxpayers, who bought the banks out of trouble and they still carry on doing bussiness as usual. The guys got paid billions and we foot the bill, if that isn’t “canny” I do not know what is.
I wonder what the master’s wife’s name is? Anyway, she goes off with her friend, Angela for shopping, but be careful, don’t spend too much to buy the clothes on sales, eh!
GrimmaTheNome, I checked the dictionary via the Internet for “cannyness,” but it was not there so I figured it out and I got it. I typed “canny” and it popped up and showed that that word “canny” with adjective means. I scrolled down and saw the word, “canniness” Not cannyness. :-) Sorry I hate to correct you for that word. But you are fine with your nice comment. Smile!

Do you mean that the English haven’t got sense enough not to get themselves into the same mess we got ourselves into??

Don’t go Fred. Standing for hours holding 8 bags while she tries on something she has no intention of buying. Now the hardware store, different story.
