    Fred’s master by this time should have realized that bassets are not built for speed. I’m not even sure that they were built for endurance, either.

    They do have a lot of endurance, but only at moderate speeds. Being scent hounds, their job in hunting is to follow a scent for as long as necessary. They may have to travel quite a distance. They were bred with short legs so their noses would be closer to the ground. Those short legs make speed difficult. Therefore they he endurance, but only t moderate speeds.
