Several years ago I was in Cape Town and was returning from dinner at the V&A mall and heard “Strike Up the Band.” There’a band shell there and that’s where the music vas emanating from. Turns out that the band playing was from the German Navy. They played a lot of Big Band numbers as well as some show tunes. At one point they were joined by a young South African vocalist sho did a bang up job on Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata.” It was one of the most magical nights.

Some cities have pianos out on the sidewalk for anybody to play, but I haven’t yet seen a band gathered around one.
