Yes, decent, but it also saves an enormous amount of time cleaning the car. Fred, you are filthy. That means you had a good time. My theory, the dirtier the dog, the more fun the dog had. True for my dogs anyway.
I think both Yakima and Thule make roof boxes for long dogs. If you can lift Fred up into one that would solve your problem. Of course, there would need to be a nice bone and comfy bed in the roof box.
For those of us who live with dogs who like to get down and dirty, here’s a simple tip to save your car (and spare your coat): cover the back (or the back seat, depending on your car) with an inexpensive movers’ blanket – it’s heavy quilted fabric and plenty large enough to cover the entire area including the seat backs. If you’d like something a bit smaller, an indoor-outdoor carpet strip will fit the bill; I’ve used on for years to cover the back seat of my cars. A non-skid backing keeps it in place and the carpet gives the dog more secure footing than most upholstery fabrics. Bonus – you can find one in nearly any color you’d like so it will match your car.

It’s much easier to send a coat off to the cleaners. Than trying to clean out a car.

That’s why you get an SUV/CUV that has a fitted dog blanket available as an accessory.

A teachable moment. From now on keep a few ragged towels in the trunk, er boot, of the van for just such possibilities as this for Fred.

Weather Tech mats for the win here. They make seat covers too. Fully washable and waterproof.
