Oh Fred, how lovely you look in the Dears beautiful garden!
Well, a long, long time ago, when I did a walk with my first boyfriend, I snitched a beautiful rose from over a fence an gave it to him as a lovedrunken present. He looked at it, a bit puzzeled, and then stared at me and chewed the petals up.
Then, years later, I had another incident with roses: my husband and I were walking on (or: on?) a beach near Heiligenhaven. An amazing sunset over the sea. I took him in my armes, kissed him and right there a wonderfull red rose lied on the beach. I gave it to him, all dreamy eyed. Then we noticed there were lots of red roses on the beach- washed ashore from a burial at sea.
I sometimes wish I could appreciate nice aromas the way a dog does … then then next migraine comes and my sense of smell gets kicked up somewhere near bloodhound. In that state, I can smell a freshly-opened soft drink from twenty paces and tell you what flavor it is. I’ll pass on having that sensitivity on a permanent basis.
I have seen the oil slick coming from the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor 2 times and the rose i seen floating there brought tears to my eyes both times!!
Roses were wonderful back in the days sweet smelling roses, that is in the days when roses had any smells. Unfortunately, that has mostly been bred out.
Our late Queen love flowers at Balmoral, Buckingham Palace and in Windsor Castle. The wreath of the flowers came from Balmoral and Buckingham Palace when her coffin was brought into Westminster Hall today.
They haven’t got no noses, \\ The fallen sons of Eve; \\ Even the smell of roses \\ Is not what they supposes; \\ But more than mind discloses \\ And more than men believe.
The brilliant smell of water, \\ The brave smell of a stone, \\ The smell of dew and thunder, \\ The old bones buried under, \\ Are things in which they blunder \\ And err, if left alone.
The wind from winter forests, \\ The scent of scentless flowers, \\ The breath of brides’ adorning, \\ The smell of snare and warning, \\ The smell of Sunday morning, \\ God gave to us for ours
My dog MECO and I are doing Scent Work competitions now and I am amaaaaaaazed at those canine noses! But if I had that sensitive a nose and smelled a David Austin rose, I would lose consciousness!♡
I once hastened to the dentist with a tooth problem, stopping briefly to “smell the roses” on one of the beautiful rosebushes that grew in front of his office. The roses smelled wonderful! Now, I always have to get two shots to get numb enough for dental work. After the appointment, I stopped to “smell the roses” again, and couldn’t smell at thing! Apparently the numbness also affected my sense of smell. (Which I’d never heard of happening to anyone). It soon passed, but I didn’t mind a bit, since I was perfectly comfortable during the dental procedure. It was sure weird sensation at the time, though!

Since dogs have a heightened sense of smell, I guess we can’t.
