In Wales, the place name affix -ford refers to a road. I live in Chester which is very close to the Welsh border. In Wales, there are towns called Pulford and Gresford nearby. Gresford was used by Washington Irving as the setting for his essay “The Angler” which appears in “The Sketch Book” alongside his stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle”. Washington Irving came from an English family and lived in Britain from 1815 to 1824. He lived in Liverpool from 1815 to 1818 and in Birmingham from 1818 to 1824.
It appears to me that ‘Mrs. Dear’ is giving ‘Mr. Dear’ some ’backseat driving from the front passenger seat — like ALL wives do although quite a few would not do the driving themselves ! ! !
You had to ford the creek to get to my grandparents house. Or you could come the long way down the mountain from where the county road cut through the orchard.
The only ford I have ever seen was in Ireland. It is on the side of a hill and is very pretty. The water flows down the hill, over the road, and continues down to the sea.
I remember coming across a ford that was just after a 90 degree bend, it was dark and I had a yokel on my tail while allowing satnav to guide around traffic going home. A few weeks later it was in news because a van had got stuck in flooding and washed off road (a good 70cm higher than when I’d gone through)
About that time I saw a ford appear across a road – there were signs for it and what was outlet – but in 5 years of using road I’d never seen it flood before.
I haven’t encountered a ford since the ‘70s. It was on a road way down in the southern end of the county. I was hoping the ford wouldn’t be a problem as I was driving a Chevy truck. ;]
Here in Washington, DC, there’s Milkhouse Ford along Rock Creek. I remember Dad driving through the Park so we could cross – it was a thrill and another reason why we liked visiting Dad’s Uncle Joe! It’s a foot path now. https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/milkhouse-ford-hike.htm

Not a smart idea. It takes only a few inches of water to lift a car and send you down stream.

That’s why I won’t buy an electric car.
And if that’s not a good reason, I’ll think of another.
