In my experience, those who eschew traditional religion wind up with something else, like environmentalism, which has its own set of commandments and rules. People like rules. That’s why entertainers like Miley Cyrus are so miserable—they keep pushing the envelope, but now that there IS no envelope, they can’t shock people and there’s no guardrail.
