Reminds me of meeting a young lady back around 1986. I was visiting from our church and this young lady said that it was so strange to her to think that the women in our church were married to one guy and he was the father of all her kids. In this young lady’s case, she had 5 children all with different dads and she hadn’t been married to any of them. And she thought our way was strange. But as I talked about how the man goes to work every day and comes home and stays with his wife and kids she looked wistful.
Up until my generation, divorce in our family was not the way marriages ended. Death was the only way … and then the remaining partner would remain a widow or widower for the rest of his/her life … and usually never took off the ring. My maternal grandfather was 28 when he died of pneumonia in 1927. My grandmother was a 23 year old mother of 4, and never remarried.

Fictional characters ‘preach’ what they never practiced. Faithful married parents should gladly preach what they practice.

It’s like some kind of idealized comic strip family, isn’t it?
