Having played against nuns on athletic fields, I can attest to their intimidating nature. One nun swung at a pitch, which would have been strike three, but she told the pitcher, “No, that was just a practice swing.” The boy who was pitching didn’t say a thing - just got the ball and tossed it in again.

Dear FA/FB fans (and other assorted nerds, geeks, and Unitarians):

I ask you: where else in the comics cosmos could you find a comics-related blog containing the phrase “… was ultimately subversive of the status quo.”? Now THAT’S some mighty fine word-putting-togethering (questionable disjunct placement notwithstanding).

this was only the beginning. Drunk with power after defeating the trampling guy on horseback, they turned their greedy eyes on the lawn, that has always been a large in number and size but weak and succumbing to cuts every couple of weeks. With their superior firepower, the mighty flowerbed could bring that lawn to their knees, begging for mercy. today the lawn, tomorrow the whole neighborhood bya ha haa!

It is not exactly correct that Stepin Fetchit was the first black actor to receive a screen credit. That honor would go to Bert Williams, in Natural Born Gambler, 1917. http://www.archive.org/details/naturalborngambler

    Still a funny film.

barticle35, Noble Johnson received screen credits as well, years before Stepin Fetchit. (This would be in movies produced by the major, white-run Hollywood studious. There were also production companies owned and run by blacks; Johnson owned one called [I think] Lincoln Productions.)

Here’s a link to the “Our Gang” episode “A Tough Winter” with Stepin Fetchit.

You know, the one with the taffy pull.
