You can get an idea of who might have used the “silent interpreter” on the blog from some of the entries:12. “Where does …. live?”13. “Do you have ….? (e.g. weapons)” 17. “Where are you going?”18. “Give me your papers.”19. “Where are weapons and ammunition?”
Larson and Watterson shook our little comic strip world by walking away from (perhaps) the two most successful comics ever published … and all because they didn’t want their creations to become stale and repetitive. That … IMHO … speaks volumes about who these two guys are.
After spending a good amount of time on a farm in West Virginia, I discovered the origin of the word “tick.” It’s what they sound like when you yank them off your neck and squeeze them between your fingernails. shudder
That silent translator reminds me of browsing in a used bookshop somewhere in another galaxy. I came across an old phrasebook designed for British soldiers stationed in India. I wish, I wish, I wish I had bought it – it had phrases, with appropriate translations in Hindustani, like (I am not making this up) “You black bastard, you call these boots clean?”
How come they don’t do Far Side reruns on gocomics? Of course it would upset the Argyle Sweater guy but it would be great running that awesome classic strip. Much like C & H.
Silent Interpreter Phrasebook – I think the Russian in the window translates as: “You speak the truth” – as in … You tell me the truth. More of a demand than a request.
I used the new improved FB Search Box (Acronym: FBSB) you touted yesterday or today or whenever it was (I’m in Dallas. It seems I lose track of time when I’m in Dallas these days. But I digress).
Anyway, I searched for the term “Nympho.” (no results). Then I searched for “Librarian.” (same response). Since I trust your memory more than I do mine on such matters, I can only conclude that the FBSB is, in a word, lame.
/s/ Rotifer
P.S. I did not search for occurrences of “lame.”
P.P.S. I am not suggesting that I think “Nympho Librarian” describes you. (Marg maybe, but not you). I don’t know what describes you. If I did I and I could bottle it and sell it, I’d market it to all 32,876 of your subscribers and have enough money to go on a pasta binge that might last a decade or more.

I can’t figure out what’s going on with the “Wasp on Water” — are those large ovals part of its shadow? If so, why are they so large? Any scientists out there who can explain the inexplicable?
I took the large ovals to be the shadows of the surface tension of the water where the feet of the wasp are touching; that’s how the wasp is standing on water.

The Russian second-person plural is both a statement and the imperative form. Which one is meant would depend on the context and the tone of voice. This is how a German soldier would command a Russian prisoner to tell the truth – Especially since No. 20, Sagen Sie die Wahrheit! is most definitely a command.

Strigiphilus garylarsoni: owl lice. Really. I’d trade in that topper for a coonskin! Awfully pedantic for a gambler, though….

We need something like Drosophila Teresaburritti in the scientific nomenclature.

I wish those sugarblocks were for sale. They seem to be Spiceship’s creation for artistic purposes only. :(

I noticed Munari either ripped off or paid homage to W. Steig’s artwork with that chair…
