The dame had a point. All I had to do was map it out with Godreau at the center. And besides, I liked the way the evening Sun fell in through the slats of the Venetian blinds and made dust motes dance around her, throwing her silhouette onto the wall in perfect broken monochrome detail. I took my feet off the desk and sat up to reach down to the bottom right hand drawer, where I kept the bottle of Jameson. I poured two fingers into two glasses, neat. “I’ll take the case.” I said, “I get $300 a day, plus expenses. I’ll itemize them for you.” I handed her one glass and sipped at the other. Nodding assent, she took the glass and put it away in one blast. Then she handed me my standard two grand retainer, turn around, and floated gently out of my run-down office, stirring up dust, memories, and other things best left alone, in her passing. She paused for just a moment at the door, “I’ll be in touch”, she said quietly. Then she walked out and it was like the Sun going behind a cloud. When the door closed, I felt like a man waking from a long dream. I had a job to do, and no time like the present.

I finally figured out the color scheme in the balloon. I hope that’s not Gabriel with the horn, “Calling all car dealers.”
