Floof is a tiny kitten with a big imagination. She is the adopted daughter of Shawm and Stella, the younger sister of Kate and the older sister of Sirius. Floof works as a library cat, which inspires many imaginary adventures. She loves to tease Sirius but is always there for him.

Kate Buffet is a 9-year-old girl who can talk to animals. She is artistic and resourceful and wears striped socks that never match. Kate makes mistakes but can think her way through them, often with unexpected results.

Shawm, the Afghan hound, is a great dad to children of all species. He tells Floof and Sirius stories that may or may not be true. He is an easygoing, peaceful fellow who loves terrible puns, carrots and his family. Shawm often worries that he will lose his dignity—and often does.

Sirius is a poodle-Afghan mix (Affydoodle). Floof’s little brother loves her even when she teases him. Sirius is very young and often misinterprets words. He’s fond of practical jokes and will eat anything—Kate’s sneakers are his favorite snack. He enjoys everything except baths.

Stella, the poodle, loves French culture, her family and high fashion. She eats dog food off a plate, drinks water from a glass and enjoys getting the latest poodle cuts. Stella is a good mother who can make the rules but also let her dog hair down for playtime.

Mrs. Oldman and Buster are the Buffet family’s downstairs neighbors. They have lived together so long that they have begun to look alike. Mrs. Oldman can speak to animals, and they can speak to her. She’s the neighborhood pet sitter and a free spirit who dances to her own tune.

The Furr twins are Kate’s friends. Arturo “Arf” Furr likes dinosaurs, rockets and gadgets. He is a good sportsman and a good sport. His sister, Barbara Furr—who prefers the nickname “La-VA” for obvious reasons—is practical and direct. Their mother, Paloma, is a veterinarian, and their father, Ezio, is a zookeeper.

Optima “Poppy” Populare is not a friend but will sometimes help Kate if it benefits her. Poppy is jealous of Kate’s artistic talent and tries to upstage or thwart her when she can. However, her actions always end up helping Kate.

His show name is Claytongus Chins Chiffon, and he is a purebred Sealyham terrier, but he identifies as Chaos—and lives up to it. Chaos is “Poppy” Populare’s puppy and becomes Sirius’ best canine friend. He is always getting into trouble, and Sirius joins him against his better judgment.

Lewis met Kate, Arf, and LaVa at summer camp. He knows all the scary campfire stories, and Kate believes every one of them. Lewis is a science nerd who has a story for every occasion. His parents, Howard and Shirley, are dentists.

Brazilian capybaras Bonnie and Clyde escaped from the zoo and menaced the city’s vegetable gardens. Kate rescued them from their island hideout and raised funds for the Capybara Sanctuary, where they now live. Baby Potato inherited her parents’ escapist tendencies and has been spotted in some very unexpected locations!

Little Finger (Iskweninj in Ojibway) is a complete opportunist. He sometimes helps others but more often helps himself to Kate’s peanut butter sandwiches or the capybaras’ carrots and breakfast fruits.

Pratt-L is the world’s least improved artificial intelligence program. When it is wrong, it is definitively wrong. Pratt-L is on every electronic device or appliance Kate uses. It can also speak to cats and dogs but is unaware that they aren’t supposed to answer Kate’s test questions.
