The Daily News in New York consistently leaves out the first panel. Thanks to Gocomics I get a complete GA.

    Yes, he does.

Longtime GA readers will recall that Rufus did once propose to Melba and they very nearly got married. After a lengthy and, if I recall correctly, virtually Wallet-free storyline, one or the other of them broke it off.

I see Melba opts not to wear her ever-present Minnie-Pearl-esque hat when hanging around at home.

NotNorman, I was just wondering if she was still mayor. If so, it must not pay well, she still can’t afford clothing that fits. Or shoes other than work boots. Rufus ALWAYS carries around Kitty. That cat must be about 45 now.

Ah, a break from the stoopid early bred or what ever the weekly story line is.

I notice old Rufus is starting to show some age with his salt and pepepr hair in the second panel where he tips his hat to her honor the mayor Miss Melba

Well, Melba… don’t leave the man waiting… yes or no?

This story seems more appropriate for the spring, with flowers and the hint of an engagement in the air.

Melba Rose still is Mayor of Gasoline Alley. If you look back at the strip on August 02, 2009, (http://www.gocomics.com/gasolinealley/2009/08/02 )you can see her preparing to address the Ladies’ League Luncheon.

Also, I’m guessing that every time Rufus’ “Kitty” dies, Joel secretly replaces him with another.

I seem to have a vague memory of the story arc where kitty first turned up. Would have been around 1960, when we still got GA in the local paper. (Or am I just hallucinating?)

Our local paper does not carry GA. Rufus has a case of marriage proposal freight.

I’ve only been reading this since they started to feature the characters lots of you complain about so I don’t know the core characters. If Rufus carries a white cat around I like him. I have a white cat I carry around too.

If you take the survey which Go Comics talks about in some of their little blurbs, you will be rewarded with a free six month Genius subscription.

While the archive which goes along with the Genius subscription wouldn’t be worth paying extra to me - it DOES go back to the year 2004. During the year of 2004 - almost the entire year was devoted to members of the Wallet family. About February 14, Walt went out for a stroll and got lost. Skeezix went looking for him. It was supposed to be Skeezixes 83rd birthday. Once Skeezix found Walt, they talked about Wallet family history on the way home. When they got home, Phyllis mentioned that there was “more” to the story about Walt finding Skeezix on his doorstep. However, Skeezix was tired and decided to go home and Phyllis decided to wait until Skeezix returned the following day to tell them “the rest of the story.” Unfortunately, Phyllis died during the night. After Phyllis was gone, they discovered letters between Phyllis and Skeezix’s mother which indicated that Phyllis was actually the sister of Skeezix’s mother - and that Skeezix’s mother had asked Phyllis to keep an eye on her son. After another relative tried to look after Walt for a while, the family finally hired Gertie - so Gertie has only been working for Walt for about five years. However, it IS true that Gasoline Alley was a LOT more interesting back in the days when the majority of stories revolved around a member of the Wallet family. Which makes you wonder WHY the writer apparently appears to be bending over backward to avoid involving any members of the Wallet family as major players in any of the more recent stories.
