I haven’t seen a “Smilin’ Jack” comic in maybe 50 years, but I immediately recognized the character. He was constantly popping buttons, and chickens followed him around to eat them. Thanks for that memory. Had been buried for half a century.
Good likeness too! http://tobacco.stanford.edu/tobacco_main/images.php?token2=fm_st012.php&token1=fm_img8824.php&theme_file=fm_mt002.php&theme_name=For%20your%20Throat&subtheme_name=Johnny%20Calls%20for%20Philip%20Morris
Johnny Roventini wasn’t the only “Johnny”. Meinhardt Raabe, for example, (who also did Little Oscar [Meyer] and the Coronor of Munchkinland), also did the role. But this looks like Johnny Roventini, all right.

Clever reference. “Call for Philip Morris” ad campaign!

Be careful, Johnny — some people would rather fight than switch.

I couldn’t remember so I googled it. Fat Stuff was a character in Smilin’ Jack.

Aye. Used for years. Johnny was an actual bell hop before becoming the “mascot” for Phillip Morris, and was a very short man.

Not to be confused with the never-was-never-will-be imaginary future dreamed of by wussy Leftists.
